This Might Be a Better Way to Age-proof Your Eyes and Reduce AMD Risk, According to Optometrist

According to expert, this supplement can absorb blue light, protect the highly sensitive cells of the eyes, and slow down the early development of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

In a 2022 study examining the prevalence of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) in the United States in 2019, findings revealed a significant increase in the number of affected individuals.

An estimated 19.83 million Americans were identified as living with some form of AMD, marking an increase of more than 2.75 times compared to previous estimates.

Statistics indicate that approximately 1 in 10 Americans aged 50 and older exhibit early-stage AMD, while roughly 1 out of every 100 individuals in the same age group suffer from the advanced, vision-threatening form of the condition.

While there is no known treatment for AMD, one expert believes that certain nutrients may help prevent or halt its progression.

Specialist optometrist Neil Laird, associated with Pure Optical, underscores the importance of lutein and zeaxanthin, compounds responsible for the vibrant colors in fruits and vegetables, in significantly reducing the risk of AMD development.

These natural pigments serve as crucial filters against harmful blue light, shielding the delicate cells within the eye from potential damage.

Laird explained, “Long-term exposure to blue light like that from our phones can quickly damage the healthy cells in our retina, leading to the early development of AMD.”

“However, lutein and zeaxanthin,” according to the expert, “can absorb this blue light, helping protect the delicate cells of our eyes and slow down any damage.”

These beneficial pigments are naturally present in foods like egg yolks, spinach, pistachios, and kale. Yet, to harness their protective effects, aiming for a daily intake of five to six milligrams of each nutrient is recommended.

While achieving optimal levels solely through diet can pose a challenge, supplements might provide a supportive solution.

According to Laird, Pairing lutein and zeaxanthin-rich foods with healthy fats enhances their absorption.

And taking supplements daily can guarantee that you are getting the right amount to protect your eyes.
