“It’s scandalizing, every single day”: Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speaks clearly about the power struggles in her own party. The Republicans’ intentions for election tampering are even more dangerous.

In many states of the United States, there are initiatives by Republican representatives to change the electoral law. 

They often refer directly or indirectly to ex-President Donald Trump’s false claim that there was manipulation in the 2020 presidential election. 

Now, Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has spoken out, warning of the dangers that this development could bring.

When asked by New Yorker magazine whether she believed the United States would still be living in a democracy in ten years, she said: “I think there’s a very real risk that we will not.”

Ocasio-Cortez continued: “What we risk is having a government that perhaps postures as a democracy, and may try to pretend that it is, but isn’t.”

The congresswoman is a member of the Democratic Party’s left wing, which has been vocal in its criticism of President Joe Biden’s policies and does not hold back the party’s more conservative members.

She is currently observing efforts by the political opposition in many places to influence the outcome of future elections. 

“We’ve already seen the opening salvos of this, where you have a very targeted, specific attack on the right to vote across the United States, particularly in areas where Republican power is threatened by changing electorates and demographics.”

Urgent appeal to the party – and the President

Not only do the Democrats currently hold the White House, but they also hold thin majorities in both chambers of the US Congress. 

Nevertheless, initiatives and reform packages repeatedly fail due to the resistance of individual Democrats – on whom the party is absolutely dependent due to the narrow majority. 

The focus is on Senator Kyrsten Sinema and Senator Joe Manchin, both prominent blockers.

The tough negotiations in her own party are also causing frustration for Ocasio-Cortez. 

“Honestly, it is a shit show,” she told the New Yorker. 

Her party doesn’t have much time left, said the congresswoman with a view to the midterm elections in the fall.

In the process, her party could lose its majority.

Therefore, the moment to act has now come, also and especially for Biden: “The President has not been using his executive power to the extent that some would say is necessary,” said the politician.
