Eye Health: Meet The Weird Fruit That Nourishes And Protects Cornea As We Age – According To Experts

Taking good care of our eyes becomes more important as we age. There are some things that can affect our vision that we can’t change, but there are also things we can do that might help us avoid problems. One such method is via dietary changes.

London’s Eye Clinic suggests dragon fruit as an exotic food that may help keep eyes healthy.

The dragon fruit is native to southern Mexico as well as Guatemala, Costa Rica, and El Salvador.

Dragon fruit is also known as pitaya or strawberry pear; its name stems from its scaly and spiked exterior.

According to the experts from the Eye Clinic, this fruit is full of vitamin A, vitamin C, and carotene.

Vitamins A, C, and E are proven to provide nourishment and protection for the cornea.

According to them as cited by Express, “this fruit has a very unique appearance and has recently become extremely popular due to its many health benefits and nutrients.

“This fruit is good for maintaining both low-light and colour vision.”

Vitamin A shortage is the greatest avoidable cause of childhood blindness in the world.

It’s a crucial vitamin that is “eye-friendly,” according to the American Optometric Association (AOA).

“Vitamin A,” as agency says, “supports functioning of the conjunctival membranes and cornea.”

Vitamin A is also present Cheese, Eggs, Fatty fish, low-fat spreads, Yogurt, and milk

Similarly, vitamin C is recognized as beneficial for eyesight by various sources.

The AOA claims that vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, “promotes healthy blood vessels and helps neutralise oxidative damage that can lead to cataract development or age-related macular degeneration (AMD) progression.”

According to the experts, adults need about 40 mg of vitamin C every day.

This should be controllable by food alone, however supplements may be used if necessary.

Additional foods that contain vitamin C include:

  • Oranges and orange juice are examples of citrus fruit.
  • Peppers
  • Strawberries
  • Blackcurrants
  • Brussels sprouts, potatoes, and broccoli.

Yet dragon fruit’s health advantages go beyond eyesight.

Dragon fruit contains antioxidant activity that may also protect inflammatory disorders including gout and arthritis, according to research that was published in the International Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

“Pitaya fruits have a high dosage of vitamin C, vitamin A, B1, B12 and E. Mineral contents in dragon fruits include a good dosage of potassium, magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus.”
