Scientists Now Say Pecans Should Be Considered a ‘Superfood’ – But Why?

Published on

Can pecans be considered a superfood? A recent study published by Texas A&M University says pecans could be consumed either directly, as an added ingredient, or as part of a dietary supplement.

The latest research suggests that daily consumption of pecans could be beneficial for individuals weighing approximately 59 kg (130 lbs), with the optimal intake being between 22-25 pecans per day to reap the health benefits.

Consistent pecan consumption may be an effective preventative measure against obesity and its associated health complications, including diabetes and fatty liver disease.

This finding was the result of a study conducted by a team of scientists from the United States and Mexico who tested the effects of a high-fat and pecan-based diet on mice.

The results revealed that the nut consumption led to increased energy expenditure in the mice, decreased dysbiosis — an imbalance in gut bacteria —, and a reduction in inflammation. Interestingly, the study indicated that pecans have a potential effect on low-grade inflammation which could eventually lead to chronic inflammation and various widespread diseases.

The team suggested that pecans should be classified as a “superfood,” which can be enjoyed in their natural state, incorporated into various recipes, or taken as part of a nutritional supplement.

The research was led by Professor Luis Cisneros-Zevallos, a food scientist at Texas A&M University, and his colleagues.

“Obesity and diabetes numbers are increasing in modern society, worldwide,” said Professor Cisneros-Zevallos.

“The trend in high-fat diet consumption is one of the main reasons besides lifestyle and genetic predisposition.

“People are searching for healthier options, and we have now shown pecans are a healthy tool consumers have in their hands.”

Dr. Amit Dhingra, who heads the Department of Horticultural Sciences at Texas A&M, stated that the beneficial properties of pecans have been acknowledged by the natives of the Americas for centuries. He claimed that this research now offers scientific backing for this traditional knowledge and provides insight into the potential mechanisms that contribute to these nutritional benefits.

He further added, “Our department is focused on the areas of sustainability, wellness, and food security — and this research illustrates the relevance of horticultural crops for human health.”

Professor Cisneros-Zevallos said that the data collected from this study will be valuable for future clinical investigations into the nutritional advantages of pecans. He also noted the economic and historical significance of pecans for Texas and the US, emphasizing that their production offers stability to farmers and presents opportunities for the development of innovative pecan products.

The study was published in the scientific journal Nutrients.
