The Drug That Offers Long-lasting Relief From OCD Symptoms – The Answer May (not) Shock You

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a challenging mental health condition, marked by unwanted thoughts and repetitive behaviors, affecting approximately 2% of people irrespective of their age.

This condition often leads to heightened anxiety and can isolate patients, affecting personal relationships and daily activities.

Present treatments primarily involve cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), aimed at restructuring thought patterns, coupled with antidepressants. However, the outcomes can be slow and unfruitful for 30–40% of those affected.

Interestingly, there’s a revival of interest in a potential treatment from the 1970s: psychedelics, a category of mind-altering substances.

Dr. Anne Buot, a cognitive neuroscience specialist, highlights that the resurgence in interest in psychedelics for mental health therapy has been notable, especially for OCD where treatment options remain limited.

Yet, because these compounds are prohibited in many regions, obtaining comprehensive data through clinical trials remains challenging. Dr. Buot, Luc Mallet (AP-HP) and their team at the Paris Brain Institute are making strides, recently unveiling a study in “Scientific Reports” that indicates the potential benefits of LSD and psilocybin in alleviating OCD symptoms.

New Insight into OCD Treatment: The Potential Role of Psychedelics

The therapeutic impact of psychedelics is of particular interest due to their potential for immediate effects, unlike traditional treatments which might require extended use. However, the relationship between the experience under psychedelics and their therapeutic efficacy is yet to be established.

Consuming psychedelics prompts a shift in one’s awareness, causing the individual to view the world from a dramatically different perspective for several hours. This profound experience can be intense, often disconnecting users from their previous emotional conditions and promoting the development of novel ways of thinking.

Existing research indicates that the immediate impacts of psychedelics, evident from the initial use, differ from the gradual outcomes observed with ongoing treatments like antidepressants.

The compounds, LSD (synthetic) and psilocybin (found in certain mushrooms), seem to be particularly promising, acting on specific serotonin receptors.

But more information is required, even from animal studies, to anticipate their potential.

“Among other things, these substances act on certain serotonin receptors,” remarks psychiatrist Luc Mallet. “Unfortunately, even in animals, we don’t have sufficient data to predict their effectiveness.”

To gather insights, the team evaluated past users’ experiences with these substances. An online survey was administered to 174 individuals with OCD symptoms who had consumed psychedelics. The feedback suggested reduced OCD symptoms, with around 30% experiencing benefits lasting over three months.

“Finally, we observed that the dose of LSD or psilocybin was positively correlated with the intensity of the psychedelic experience and its pleasantness,” comments Luc Mallet.

However, these findings come with caveats. The results are based on personal experiences, which are prone to biases, particularly due to participants’ beliefs and expectations about the substances.

It’s clear that the transformative nature of a psychedelic journey may reinforce this bias, with users often experiencing profound feelings of connection or altered perceptions. Dr. Buot emphasizes that further studies, from various disciplinary perspectives, are essential to truly gauge the therapeutic effects.

“Understanding the extent to which the very nature of the psychedelic experience—strongly influenced by people’s history, culture, and imagination—affects the therapeutic effects will be essential,” adds Anne Buot. “To do this, we will need complementary approaches, in ethnography and psychology, for example.”

For a clearer understanding and optimal application of these treatments, comprehensive clinical studies are required, coupled with in-depth research into their long-term biological effects. There’s much to learn in this exciting area of mental health research.
