With the mobile browser Opera Mini users can now share files between two smartphones. An Internet connection is not necessary for this: the browser connects the mobile devices directly via WLAN, which promises high transmission rates. The transfer is “200 times faster than Bluetooth,” promises Opera. The feature is a more private alternative to cloud services or e-mail delivery and is similar to AirDrop on iOS. Users do not have to worry about limited data volumes. An additional app for distributing files also saves the browser.

The two devices must be nearby for data transfer and have the current Opera Mini version installed. The new feature is located in the main menu (Opera icon) under “File Sharing“. To receive a file, the user must first scan a QR code that the sending device displays. Opera Mini then creates a private network to ensure a fast and secure transfer. After successful data transmission, the sender receives a message. The received files are clearly listed in the “Receive” tab. Transfer and download files are handled by a download manager.

Only for Android
Opera Mini is currently only available for Android. Thought the browser is especially for narrow-chest phones and for areas where a stable Internet connection is not a matter of course. The built-in compression in the browser saves up to 90 percent of mobile data. “Users who want to share files can now save even more by sharing them offline with no data costs,” Opera explains.
