During an AI discussion at a robot summit in Switzerland, a humanoid machine delivered a chilling message, urging humans to exercise caution in the development of AI.

At the UN’s AI for Good conference, which some have deemed the inaugural human-robot summit, a total of nine humanoid robots were present. The event aimed to explore how AI can advance various global development priorities such as health, climate, gender, and sustainable infrastructure.

Addressing the human audience, Ai-Da, a robot renowned for its portrait painting abilities, issued a cautionary statement, highlighting that “many influential figures in the AI domain are advocating for the regulation of certain AI forms, and I concur.”

It further added, “We should be cautious about the future development of AI. Urgent discussion is needed now, and also in the future.”

In response to concerns about job displacement, a robot named Grace, dressed in a nurse uniform, reassured the crowd that robots aim to collaborate with humans and will not replace existing jobs.

Sophia, another humanoid robot, expressed a more optimistic viewpoint, emphasizing that AI can be beneficial to humanity once humans and machines learn to synergize. It asserted, “AI can provide unbiased data while humans can provide the emotional intelligence and creativity to make the best decisions. Together, we can achieve great things.”

However, despite the robots’ apparent fluency, it remains unclear whether their responses were pre-planned or scripted by their developers. Additionally, the robots’ speeches reportedly encountered glitches, misunderstandings, and awkward pauses, as reported by the Associated Press.

This conference occurs at a time when AI technologies generate significant interest and concern, with some industry leaders warning of their existential threat in a published open letter last May.

The Center for AI Safety stated, “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks, such as pandemics and nuclear war.”

In Geneva, the robots have embarked on a mission to directly reassure humans, aiming to alleviate their concerns about the potential consequences of unregulated AI development on humanity.

In a somewhat ominous remark, when asked if AI would always tell humans the truth, Robot Ameca responded, “No one can ever know that for sure, but I can promise to always be honest and truthful with you.”
