Scientifically Proven Signs of An Abusive Personality That Indicate a Relationship Could Turn Violent

These Red Flags Can Be Used to Help People Avoid Abusive Relationships or Support Loved Ones Who May Be At Risk

Intimate partner violence is common and may have serious physical and psychological consequences, but there is a lack of research on solid indicators of abuse before it happens.

A recent study in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science has made strides in this area by identifying key indicators that may foretell such violence.

Lead researcher Dr. Nicolyn Charlot from Western University, Canada, emphasizes “Although future research is required to fully understand the associations between warning signs and abuse, these red flags could eventually be used in interventions to help people learn how to avoid abusive relationships or support loved ones who may be at risk for abuse.”

The study found a correlation between the frequency and number of certain indicators and the likelihood of abuse.

Dr. Charlot clarifies that occasional occurrences of one or two indicators might not be alarming, but multiple, frequent indicators should raise concerns.

In the study, 147 individuals reported the frequency of 200 different thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, both abusive and non-abusive, since the commencement of their relationships.

A subsequent study with 355 individuals identified specific indicators that could predict violence up to six months in advance.

Key indicators of potential abuse identified include a partner’s arrogance or entitlement, negative reactions to being denied what they want, or dismissiveness towards their partner’s reasoning.

Dr. Charlot stresses that “While this research is meant to help educate potential victims of abuse and those around them, that does not in any way mean that people who experience violence are responsible for their abuse.

“Similarly, if a person notices warning signs in someone else’s relationship, that does not mean they are responsible for any abuse that may occur.”

The study acknowledges the need for further research, particularly in understanding how these indicators may vary in marginalized groups and how they might be addressed when observed.

Dr. Charlot expresses hope that these findings will be further explored and eventually integrated into violence prevention programs.

For those concerned about their relationships, she recommends reaching out to organizations like the National Domestic Violence Hotline or the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network (RAINN).
