In China it is now possible to access the subway through facial recognition

Published on

By now we know that the main Chinese cities are full of cameras, which (using facial recognition software) are able to identify anyone in a matter of seconds.

In a report recently published by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), we discovered that in the city of Shenzen they have integrated a facial recognition system that allows access to the subway without having to do anything at all.

It is already being tested in several cities

Well, there really is something that people should do. For starters, this program is designed for people who are over 60 years old, and they are the ones who have to register in this system.

At the moment, this service is operating in 18 stations on line 11, adding a total of 28 automatic machines and 60 self-service ticket processors. Cities like Jinan, Shanghai, Qingdao, Nanjing and Nanning are currently also experimenting with this system.

This technology has been developed by the metro company together with Tencent. According to SCMP, the fan will gradually open up so that other “community sectors” can use this system. Everything indicates that the next to use it will be army veterans.

In countries like China, it is increasingly common to use this type of payment method. And, as this survey published in 2018 by the ‘China’s Payment and Clearing Association’ demonstrates, 85% of Chinese said they felt comfortable when paying using a biometric method.

With this service, it will not be necessary to scan a QR code on the mobile phone. They will simply have to cross the door for this system to scan their faces and discount this amount from their account.

The truth is that in China it is increasingly common to “pay with your face“. In the middle of this year, The Wall Street Journal published a report that ensures that the two main payment services in the country (WeChat and Alipay) are competing to dominate the kiosk sector that allow customers to pay by face recognition.
