Protests in New York over the death of an African American black man in Wisconsin

Published on

Hundreds of people marched through the streets of Manhattan on Monday to show their anger and rejection of the incident in the state of Wisconsin in which an African-American was shot several times in the back by the police when he was walking away from the agents.

The protest began at 5 o’clock in the afternoon in the central Times Square and then moved down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan to Washington Square Park.

During the march, attendees, carrying portraits of the victim, Jacob Blake, shouted, “How do you spell murderers? NYPD (New York Police)” or “ These racist cops must go away”.

At the head of the march, the protesters carried a large sign calling for the resignation of both US President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

The demonstration comes after Blake was shot in the back at the point-blank by police officers on Sunday, an incident captured on video that has sparked a wave of outrage.

Blake is at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee in serious condition, local authorities reported Monday.

The incident follows massive protests over the death of George Floyd on May 25 death in Minneapolis, Minnesota, who was suffocated by the NYPD officer.

A few hours after the incident, the city of Kenosha (Wisconsin), where it took place, was already registering protests.

At around 10 pm, protesters marched towards the Kenosha Public Security Building chanting “No justice, no peace.”

An hour later, a municipal garbage collection truck, positioned to block the passage to the police headquarters, was engulfed in flames as police fired tear gas grenades.

Some protesters also broke the windows of some shops and burned vehicles that were parked on the street.

Local authorities declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew, which began at midnight and lasted until 7 a.m. this Monday.
