Apple’s new wireless charger disappoints

Published on

MagSafe, Apple’s new wireless charger, turned out to be much slower than expected. It takes twice as long to charge an iPhone 12 as the 20-watt cable charger

On October 13 Apple, along with the highly anticipated iPhone 12 showed the public the MagSafe wireless charger. It sticks to an iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro using aligned magnets and promises a fast charge of up to 15 watts.

To verify this, the Wall Street Journal experts decided to conduct an experiment. They charged an iPhone 12 up to 50% battery with three types of chargers: a 7.5-watt Qi-standard wireless charger, an Apple wireless MagSafe, and one with a USB-C cable and 20-watt adapter.

And the results are as follows:

  • The champion cable charger half charged the device in 28 minutes;
  • The slowest Qi wireless charger took 1 hour and 30 minutes;
  • In the end, the MagSafe needed an exact hour to charge an iPhone 12 to 50%.

In conclusion, with a not so significant difference in power – 15 watts versus 20 – the MagSafe was much slower than expected. So the best solution would be to buy an adapter that does not come in a box in the new generation of smartphones. It is sold separately for $ 20 in Apple stores, while the MagSafe is twice the price.

The same bitten Apple has yet to comment on the test results. It is time to wait for the problem to be solved during future updates of electronic devices.
