As a champion of diplomacy and dialogue, the Turkish President appeared ahead of the EU Summit on the bloc’s relations with the country and while Merkel has warned of the possibility of sanctions being imposed.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that Turkey intends to build its future together with Europe, calling on the European Union to keep its promises to his country and not to be biased against it at the same time as the threat of sanctions is being made at the next EU Summit.

“We expect the European Union to keep its promises, not to discriminate against us or at least not to become a tool for creating hostilities against our country“

Erdogan said during a video conference speech at his AKP party’s congress.

“We do not see ourselves anywhere but in Europe. We intend to build our future together with Europe. We want stronger cooperation with our friends and allies“

he further added.

“We believe that we have no problem with any country or institution that cannot be resolved through politics, diplomacy and dialogue,” he said.

In the same speech, Erdogan said that Turkey would like to ” actively use the old and close alliance with the United States to find a solution to regional and international problems.”

European leaders will discuss the future of EU-Turkey relations at a summit in December, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday. Asked by reporters about recent tensions between Turkey and EU members, Merkel said they would monitor developments for the next two weeks before discussing possible sanctions.
