Netherlands imposes curfew for the first time since World War II

An exception will be made for emergency services and delivery services, as well as for citizens heading to/from work.

The Dutch parliament voted by a majority in favor of interim government’s proposal to introduce a curfew on the territory of the state amid the coronavirus pandemic.

This was announced on Thursday, January 21,  on the website of the legislative body.

The measure will be effective from Saturday, January 23. The curfew will be in effect from 21.00 to 04.30 local time. During this period, people will be allowed to move around the streets only in exceptional cases.

“Citizens heading to or from work will need to have a special permit signed by the employer. Dogs will be allowed to walk, but only one family member. Emergency services and home delivery services for groceries and ready meals will continue to work at night,” the statement says.

For violators of quarantine measures, a fine of Euro 95 will be collected.

The first case of infection in the Netherlands was recorded on February 27 last year. To date, more than 932,000 people have been infected with the coronavirus in the country, according to the National Institute of Health and the Environment. More than 13.3 thousand infected people died.

To prevent the spread of the disease, from mid-December 2020, an almost total quarantine was introduced in the country, within which all stores that do not sell food and essential goods, as well as gyms and cultural and entertainment institutions, were closed.

In recent weeks, the number of daily detected infections and deaths has decreased, but the authorities consider it necessary to introduce additional measures to prevent the spread of more infectious strains of the coronavirus, already identified in more than 60 countries, including the Netherlands.
