Coronavirus: Factors that reduce the effectiveness of vaccination – You can control them!

As COVID-19 vaccination is underway there are some common factors that can reduce the effectiveness of vaccines – What are they?

Depression, stress, loneliness and unhealthy choices are scientifically documented that weaken the immune system and reduce effectiveness of drugs and vaccines.

A new study published in Perspectives on Psychological Science concludes that the same is true in the case of new vaccines developed to prevent COVID-19 disease. Fortunately, however, it is possible to reduce this impact with a few simple modifications to our daily lives.

Vaccines are the safest and most effective medical devices in the history of Science. With their help, we have succeeded in eliminating many infectious diseases, such as smallpox and measles. The secret of their success is the percentage of the population that each time must be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity.

New SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus vaccines authorized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have a high rate of efficacy in the immune response, although the speed of reaching it is not the same for all people. Environmental factors, as well as genetic, physical and psychological factors, can weaken the immune system, slowing down the action of the vaccine.

This is particularly worrying as the pandemic has not yet settled completely and mental health problems have accelerated due to the prolonged Lockdown in many countries but also the uncertainty about what our life will be post-covid.

Annelise Madison, a researcher at Ohio State University, wanted to study how the effectiveness of the coronavirus vaccine is affected by our health behaviors and stressors that change the behavior of the immune system.

Vaccines generally aim to make the immune system to start working to neutralize a pathogen. So a few hours after vaccination, the body at the cellular level begins to recognize the “biological threat” and the immune system begins to produce antibodies that target the pathogenic elements. Antibody production continues and ultimately determines how effective each vaccine is in the long run.

The study by US experts focused mainly on the production of antibodies, although this is only one aspect of the immune response. Indeed, it has been observed that psychological and behavioral factors can lengthen the range of time required for immunity to build and also reduce the duration of immunity.

However, the positive is that the above factors are modifiable. “With simple movements, we may be able to maximize the effectiveness of vaccines,” explains Annelise Madison.

Therefore, according to already known strategies, regular physical exercise and adequate night’s sleep before vaccination can help the immune system to function adequately. This may ensure the best and strongest immune response as soon as possible.
