Fever, cough, taste and smell disturbances: are typical signs of Sars-CoV-2 infection. Scientists are now warning of a previously unknown symptom that is becoming more and more common in infected people.
The UK National Health Service has been proposed to add another covid symptom to the list of symptoms of coronavirus infection – the so-called “covid tongue”.
According to experts, this symptom will help identify about 20 per cent more people infected with COVID-19.
Symptoms like “covid tongue” appear in the first three days when the person is most contagious, according to Tim Spector, professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London.
To identify non-classic symptoms, Tim Spector together with other scientists has developed the COVID Symptom App, in which infected people can advise the symptoms they suffer from on day to day basis.
This data will help professionals better understand the coronavirus and contain it. According to their own data, more than four million patients worldwide have already used a digital symptom diary.

Spector has now turned his attention to the symptoms of Covid-19 via Twitter, which he has observed for a long time but is still missing from the list of official medical organizations, such as the rash, which he says occurs in one in five patients.
“The oral cavity is one of the entry points of coronavirus infection into the human body. The causative agent of the disease has a spike protein that binds to special receptors located in the nasal and oral cavity in humans. Therefore, some symptoms of the disease may appear in these places,” the scientist explained.
He clarified that signs of infection include swollen tongue, small white or red pimples, and “strange mouth sores.”

According to the epidemiologist, one in five people infected with coronavirus has symptoms that are not recorded in the official list of British medical authorities.
The publication notes that Spector is not the first scientist to report an unusual symptom of COVID-19 in the mouth.
Previously, the journal Evidence-based Dentistry described cases of blistering in the mouth in infected patients. In addition, there are cases when the coronavirus adversely affected the condition of the teeth and gums.
