Security forces dismantle the infrastructure of one of the most dangerous computer viruses in the world

The security forces of eight countries and the European police have carried out an operation to dismantle Emotet, considered one of the most dangerous computer viruses in recent years.

The botnet responsible for creating and spreading the malicious program Emotet has finally been dismantled thanks to an international operation involving the US, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Lithuania and Ukraine in coordination with the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) and the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust).

“EMOTET was much more than just a malware. What made EMOTET so dangerous is that the malware was offered for hire to other cybercriminals to install other types of malware, such as banking Trojans or ransomwares, onto a victim’s computer,” says Europol in a statement posted after the operation.

It functioned as a storage service for computer viruses for cybercriminals. This and its structure made Emotet one of the most dangerous in world computing.

“The infrastructure that Emotet used involved several hundred servers located around the world, all of them with different functionalities to manage the computers of infected victims, spread to new ones, serve other criminal groups and, ultimately, make the more resistant network against removal attempts”

explained Europol.

Emotet infrastructure was located in a small, dirty room where they were found several computers and CPU without casings, other technological equipment and spare parts for computers, as well as mobile phones and a lot of money.

For years, Emotet operated by promoting different types of viruses such as Ryuk, QakBot and TrickBot and on several occasions it managed to evade the cyber authorities of many countries.
