Edible sunscreen: this berry protects the skin from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation

Researchers from the Department of Dermatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham have discovered that grapes can protect the skin from damage caused by ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

During the experiment, nineteen healthy people consumed freeze-dried grape powder for two weeks. It turned out that their natural skin protection increased by 74.8%. 

The natural polyphenolic compounds in grapes reduce the damage caused by UV rays in healthy people, the scientists explained. 

Consuming grapes can act as an edible sunscreen. This does not mean that grapes should be used in place of sunscreen, but they can offer additional protection, said Allen Oak, author of the study. 

Scientists also indicated the efficacy of the use of grape seed extract for severe burns, which contains a large amount of powerful antioxidants. 

Also grapes can reduce the number of proteins in the body that cause inflammation and also restore DNA damage. 

Preliminary results also show that grapes help prevent skin cancer, but more research is needed in this area, the study authors noted.

According to the researcher, this research is quite exciting as our recent findings provide building blocks for additional studies that may eventuate in an oral photoprotective product from a natural source.

The study was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
