The new CDC guidelines detail that it is best to wear a cloth mask over a surgical and high-protection one, and as an alternative they suggest a single high-protection mask, type N-95, with a reinforcement so that it is well fixed, with knots in the elastics so that there are no side gaps.
Both methods have been shown to be effective in reducing the entry of potentially infectious aerosols by 95% in laboratory tests, according to the CDC.

“Everyone should wear a mask when they are in public or at home when they are with other people who do not live at home. This is especially true when it comes to concerns about the new variants,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said at a press conference, in which she acknowledged the tiredness of the population, but assured that recommendations are based on scientific data.
