The most common foods that can cause serious damage to your liver

Published on

It is one of the most important organs of the human body, hence care must be maximized so as not to suffer from liver disease in the future

The liver is the great laboratory of the human body, hence the enormous importance it has in performing vital functions. In short, it is responsible for helping the stomach digest food, eliminate toxins and store energy.

If we do not take good care of our diet or maintain bad habits such as drinking alcohol or smoking, we risk serious liver diseases that in addition to complicating our daily lives a lot can become life-threatening.

Some of the most common symptoms of various liver diseases include swelling in the abdomen or legs, sudden changes in the color of stool or urine, and most of all jaundice, that is, yellow skin and eyes. As you do not want to expose yourself to this series of risks, here are a number of foods and products that you should eliminate from your diet as soon as possible.

Sugary soft drinks

Alcohol isn’t the only drink that can wreak serious havoc on your liver. Also sugary drinks and soft drinks.

“In low doses, fructose is handled by the small intestine, however in high doses recent research has shown it to lead to liver toxicity,” says Ian Braithwaite, a British health and lifestyle specialist. “The foods that deliver the highest doses of fructose are those which contain highly refined sugars, [like] soda.”

Some sauces

If you want to take care of your liver, another of the best things you can do is say goodbye to ketchup or mustard. Like soft drinks, they contain many added sugars.

“Often the more dangerous sources of fructose are those in which the sugar content is less obvious, such as ketchup [and] salad dressings,” says the specialist.

Chips

Obviously, unless you cook them yourself, if you buy them already frozen it is very possible that they contain a high content of saturated fat.

“Diets high in saturated fats lead to increased liver fat and insulin resistance,” explains Leann Poston, a doctor specializing in liver diseases.

Vegetable oils

“Vegetable oil, containing omega-6, becomes oxidized more quickly with cooking and contributes to liver damage by way of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease,” says Kelly Cole, a British nurse.

Therefore, the best thing you can do is spend a little more money on olive oil. Your health and your liver will thank you.

Charcuterie or Deli Meat

The good amount of sodium in these types of meat products can cause an imbalance in the proportions of fluids in the body, which “makes it harder for the liver to carry out efficient filtering”, emphasizes John Fawkes, dietitian and nutritionist. This could cause much more serious liver problems in the future.
