Covid Shielding is must: UK govt adds 1.7 million people to the shielding list

Published on

The UK government has made a new Covid shielding list adding 1.7 million people. The list is made with the help of an algorithmic model developed by Oxford Scientists.

Covid Shielding has become the most followed practice in the UK following the strategy rolled out by the government to help protect the people who are at high risk of contracting a coronavirus infection.

These highly vulnerable groups have been recorded by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI), as a top priority for receiving the due vaccination.

Lately, 1.7 million others have made it to the shielding list of vulnerable and top priority groups. The NHS will soon issue a letter to these groups. The new list was made using an algorithm developed by the scientists of Oxford University who marked people who are at a “potentially severe risk” of infection, into the shielding list.

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer of England, Dr Jenny Harries said that the newly developed model will help the personnel in identifying individuals who are in the absolute need to benefit from this. “This new model is a tribute to our health and technology researchers,” she said.

These vulnerable folks will also be prioritized by the JCVI for giving the jabs. It is noteworthy that the government has strongly recommended those on the shielding list to continue shielding. Also because, a vaccine might be able to successfully prevent 90 to 95% of cases of coronavirus infection, but not all.

The Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) advised stating: “Even if you have had both doses of the vaccine, you should continue to follow this shielding advice, until further notice as we continue to assess the impact of vaccination among all groups.”

It has also advised the individuals living with any of the vulnerable or priority group members should also follow the public health norms regardless of the fact that both of them (vulnerable and non-vulnerable) might have received the vaccine. The government has made the guidelines mandatory to be followed for another six weeks until March 31.
