A dietary habit that destroys the immune system, according to scientists

An international team of scientists has figured out how excessive consumption of fructose could trigger an inflammatory response of the immune system, causing damage to cells and tissues.

Scientists from the University of Swansea, the University of Bristol, and the Francis Crican Institute have named a dietary habit that poses a danger to immunity.

It turned out that high doses of fructose negatively affect the immune system. This is the conclusion reached by experts who studied the effect of this type of sugar on mice.

“Glucose triggered glutaminolysis and oxidative metabolism in their bodies – processes that increase the level of inflammatory cytokines,” the researchers explained.

In the course of studying the immune response to an abundance of fructose, it turned out that inflammatory reactions of the immune system caused by excessive consumption of fructose disrupt the functioning of organs and also lead to damage to cells and tissues.

Dr Nick Jones from Swansea University’s Medical School explained: “Research into different components of our diet can help us understand what might contribute to inflammation and disease and what could be best harnessed to improve health and wellbeing.”

Dr Emma Vincent in the Bristol Medical School: Populational Health Sciences (PHS) added: “Our study is exciting because it takes us a step further towards understanding why some diets can lead to ill health.”

Scientists remind us that fructose is commonly found in sugary drinks, sweets, and fast foods and is widely used in food production. It increases the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
