An agent from the diplomatic corps of the London Metropolitan Police (MET) has been arrested on suspicion of the kidnapping and murder of 33-year-old Sarah Everard.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the developments in the Sarah Everard investigation. Like the whole country my thoughts are with her family and friends,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on his Twitter account.

The arrested police officer, who the media has identified as Wayne Couzens, belonged to the armed branch of Scotland Yard charged with protecting diplomatic headquarters and the premises of the British Parliament.

The young woman disappeared around 9:00 p.m. GMT on March 3, when she left the house of some friends in the Clapham district in the direction of her own home, a half-hour walk through a park and residential streets in southern La British capital.

Human remains were discovered in the last hours in a forest in Kent, a county in the southeast of the country where the suspect of a crime resides that has shocked and alarmed British society.

Cressida Dick, chief commissioner of the MET, acknowledged that the arrest of an active duty officer in connection with this investigation “sent waves of shock and anger.”

“I speak on behalf of all my colleagues in the Met when I say we are utterly appalled at this dreadful news. Our job is to patrol the streets and to protect people,” he said.

Some reports suggest that agent Couzens – who apparently has a political family in Ukraine – was on duty that day guarding the US embassy in Vauxhall, a district adjacent to Clapham.

Secretary of State for the Home Department, Priti Patel, tried to contain the alarm that has been triggered on social networks stating that “all women should feel safe walking the streets without fear of abuse or violence.”
