The country’s chief infectious disease specialist, Anthony Fauci, on Sunday announced the threat of a new wave of coronavirus infection. He also called on former President Donald Trump to persuade his supporters to get the vaccine. 

In a Fox News Sunday program, Fauci pointed to new trends in the spread of the infection in Europe and warned of the possibility of similar trends in the United States in a few weeks. Fauci added that it was not yet time to declare victory over the virus.

“They thought they were home free, and they weren’t, and now they are seeing cases going up,” Fauci said.

Asked by host Chris Wallace how to overcome skepticism about the vaccine, especially among Republicans, Fauci called on Donald Trump to persuade his supporters to get the vaccine.

“I think it would be huge if Trump voiced support for vaccination,” Fauci said, adding that Donald Trump was a very popular person among Republicans.

In another interview with NBC’s “Meeting with the Press” program, he called the fact that Trump supporters do not want to be vaccinated confusing. “We need to draw a line between political preferences and common sense, the undoubted issue of public health… Vaccines have saved us from measles, chickenpox, polio. What is the problem?” said Fauci.

The day before, the PBS channel published a poll that indicated that almost half of the men who identify themselves with the Republican Party said that they would not be vaccinated against COVID-19.

To date, more than 101 injections of the vaccine have been given in the United States. Addressing the nation last week, President Biden promised that by May 1, all American adults would have access to the vaccine.
