Constant hair loss and frequently brittle nails are signs that you should not ignore, as people with this disease are more likely to suffer from infectious diseases like new coronavirus.

According to the World Health Organization, anemia is a condition in which the levels of erythrocytes (red blood cells) or the concentration of hemoglobin within them are lower than what is considered normal.

The disease causes a decrease in the blood’s ability to carry oxygen to the body’s tissues.

Some symptoms of anemia are fatigue, weakness, dizziness and even shortness of breath, says the WHO.

People with anemia are more likely to suffer from infectious diseases, they have more serious cases of the new coronavirus infection, the condition of their hair and nails also deteriorates, according to the experts.

The most common causes of anemia are nutritional deficiencies, particularly iron deficiency, although deficiencies in folic acid, vitamins B12, and A can also trigger the condition. Infectious diseases, such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, as well as parasitic infections can also cause the ailment.

The WHO considers anemia “a serious global public health problem“. Those most affected by the disease are young children and pregnant women. The agency estimates that 42% of children under the age of five and 40% of pregnant women worldwide suffer from anemia.

Anemia is an easily treatable disease, often cured only by changes in diet. It can, however, offer health risks if left untreated, which is why it’s important to seek help from a doctor if you develop symptoms.
