A new strain of COVID has been discovered in France, which may be more infectious and less susceptible to vaccines.

The detected strain of coronavirus 19B / 501Y was conventionally named Henri Mondor (after the name of the hospital in the city of Creteil, in which it was discovered for the first time).

According to doctors, this strain is already actively circulating throughout the country. Within four weeks of its discovery, it was found in 29 patients of various geographic origins in the Ile-de-France, in the southeast and southwest of the region.

In the strain, 18 mutations were found, of which 7 or 8 are the protein that makes up the “spike” of the virus and which plays a key role in the ability of the virus to enter the body, indicating likely high infectivity of the virus.

The strain is currently classified as a variant of interest.
