Vitamin D and other protective elements against Covid-19

Published on

Beyond vitamin D, the scientific community has found many other nutritional elements in another series of micronutrients to combat Covid-19

More than a year has passed since the Covid-19 pandemic began. Currently, the first vaccines have already begun to be administered and the scientific community has discovered different nutritional elements capable of dealing with the virus. Among them, vitamin Dvitamin C, omega 3, or zinc stand out.

When the pandemic broke out, the medical and scientific community set two main objectives. The first was to discover almost blindly treatments or drugs that could prevent death from Covid-19 or reduce symptoms, taking as a reference other diseases with a similar response from the body.

And on the other hand, the race against Covid-19 began with the development of a highly effective vaccine to reduce herd contagion. Finally, there have been several vaccines that have been developed in record time, which already began to be supplied at the end of 2020.

There is still a long way to go for the vast majority of the population to be vaccinated, this fact does not mean that the person who receives the vaccine cannot get the virus. Although in this case the gravity will be much less.

Thus, it is necessary to have adequate treatments to help cope with Covid-19 in hospitals. That is, treatments that guarantee the reduction of symptoms, lower the chances of admission to the ICU and prevent deaths.

Vitamin D enters the picture

In this sense, one of the micronutrients most strongly linked to Covid-19 has been vitamin D. Although experts have managed to develop a drug capable of reducing ICU admissions of hospitalized patients and avoiding deaths. Quite a feat, although this drug has yet to be perfected.

In this sense, numerous nutrition experts, both in the US and abroad, recommend increasing vitamin D levels during the pandemic as a habit of protection against Covid-19.

Omega 3, new evidence

Recent research work conducted by the Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI) and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles has managed to link omega 3 to the risk of mortality in hospitalized patients with Covid-19.

In a clinical trial with 100 participants, they were able to verify that those with high levels of omega 3 were less likely to die from Covid-19; compared to patients with poorer values.

This fact could be due to the anti-inflammatory effect of Omega 3 and the fatty acids of this nutritive element, which could limit the harmful effects of Covid-19 in severely affected patients.

Other elements beyond vitamin D

With the onset of the pandemic, the International Society for Immunonutrition quickly advised increasing the consumption of certain micronutrients through diet, such as vitamin D, vitamin C, vitamin E or zinc. And it is that all these nutritional elements intervene in the correct functioning of the immune system.

After numerous investigations, it has been proven that having high levels of vitamin D is highly beneficial against Covid-19. Mainly when the majority of hospitalized patients due to the virus have a deficiency in this micronutrient.

But experts also recommend increasing the intake of foods with vitamin C, since they understand that the characteristics of this micronutrient can generate positive effects in case of infection by Covid-19. In this sense, the scientific community works to find new treatments based on this nutritive element.

But in addition other studies have focused on micronutrients such as zinc or vitamin E, as well as Omega 3 recently. Although, on these last elements it is necessary to continue investigating in depth.

What does seem clear is that food and nutrition play a prominent role in people’s health and also in the event of contagion from Covid-19. For this reason, nutrition specialists influence a balanced diet and incorporate vitamin D and vitamin E during the pandemic.
