A pink supermoon to light up the night sky around the globe: Here’s when you can catch a glimpse of the 2021 Full Pink Moon

Published on

In the coming days you will see the phenomenon of the pink supermoon, the second-largest full moon of 2021, NASA reported.

The April 2021 full moon is the first supermoon this year, while the second — the super flower moon — will occur May 26.

The superlight can be seen in the night sky at its finest shortly after 03:30 GMT on April 27, when it will be exactly in front of the Sun, the space agency detailed.

The full pink moon will be visible at sunset on April 26 but reach “peak illumination” at 11:33 p.m. EDT. It will retain its visibility into the following day.

Despite what its name suggests, the April full moon will not have a pinkish hue. Its name, actually, is due to the Phlox subulata flower, a plant native to eastern North America that usually blooms at this time of year and has that color.

But what is a supermoon?

The term supermoon was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle just over four decades ago to refer to a new or full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90% of perigee, its closest approximation to our planet.

Since we cannot see a new moon, except when it passes in front of the Sun, the supermoons that have captured people’s attention in recent decades, according to NASA, are the supermoons.

Super Full moons are the largest and brightest moons of the year. The pink is the first of two that can be seen throughout 2021.
