A large-scale cataclysm about a hundred thousand years ago was the eruption of a volcano in Indonesia, after which the human population declined significantly.

International researchers have found that the catastrophic drop in ozone levels in the atmosphere of our planet, due to the eruption of the Toba volcano, contributed to the rapid decline in the number of people about 60-100 thousand years ago.

Scientists analyzed the climate model ModelE, which was developed by NASA’s Space Research Institute, and calculated the level of ultraviolet radiation recorded after the ancient eruption of the Indonesian volcano Toba.

Experts came to such a project due to the fact that large eruptions release large amounts of sulfur dioxide into the air. And it limits the formation of ozone.

Modeling showed that the volcanic plume from this volcano likely reduced global ozone levels by 50%.
