Experts recall the dangers of soda on brain

Sugary drinks are one of the factors contributing to the development of tooth decay, diabetes, and obesity, as well as cognitive problems.

Experts recalled the impact of soda on the cognitive and mental health of people and highlighted the main risks of sugary drinks for brain function.

According to Holly Klamer from My Crohn’s and Colitis Team, for example, a 2017 study found that drinking diet soda is associated with an increased risk of stroke and dementia.

Scientists found that among 2,888 adult participants in the experiment, those who regularly drank diet soda were almost three times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease, compared to those who abstained.

A similar risk is associated with sugary drinks and strokes.

Sodas also called Carbonated drinks often contain caffeine, which can lead to chemical changes in the brain and cause addiction.

Also, caffeinated soda has a negative effect on the length and quality of sleep.

“Due to the caffeine content in soda, sleep duration and quality can be affected,” says Dr. Chris Airey.

“Short sleep is associated with greater intake of sugared caffeinated sodas.”

Furthermore, a 2020 research paper published in the Journal of the American Heart Association revealed that consumption of one or more sugar-sweetened drinks a day can raise a person’s risk of stroke by as much as 21%.

And according to a 2021 animal model study, high sugar intake in childhood causes memory problems later in life.

“Early life sugar consumption seems to selectively impair their hippocampal learning and memory,” said Dr. Emily E. Noble, PhD, the study’s lead author, in a statement.
