This is how serious blood clots trigger in a coronavirus patient

In one million cases of coronavirus disease, 39 cases of thrombosis have been reported, which are often the cause of death.

Scientists from the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland have determined how thrombosis occurs in patients with coronavirus.

They published the results of the study in the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

Researchers analyzed blood samples from patients diagnosed with COVID-19 at the from the Beaumont Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Dublin and found that a elevated plasma von Willebrand factor (VWF) is the cause of the thrombosis.

It is a molecule responsible for blood clotting. Those infected with the coronavirus showed a severe imbalance between this molecule and its ADAMTS13 protein.

In particular, the experts noted the higher level of ADAMTS13.

“Our research is helping to understand the mechanisms that trigger serious blood clots in a coronavirus patient. This will help develop more effective treatments,” said study author Dr. Jamie O’Sullivan.

We will remind, earlier in many patients with COVID-19 cases of bleeding disorders were recorded.

According to experts, every fifth case of coronavirus infection is accompanied by a bleeding disorder, which results in venous thromboembolism.

Doctors suggest that the reason for the frequent formation of blood clots in the body of patients with COVID-19 is excessive blood clotting, hypercoagulation, which they associate with an inflammatory reaction that occurs during the course of the disease.
