China blackmailed Ukraine with COVID vaccines

Published on

Under the threat of blocking the supply of vaccines, Beijing forced Kiev to withdraw its signature from the UN resolution on the rights of the Uyghurs.

The Chinese authorities have threatened Ukraine to block the supply of more than 500,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine due to Kiev’s support for the document on the rights of the Uyghurs.

This was reported by the Associated Press, citing diplomatic sources.

It is noted that Ukraine on Tuesday signed the document of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, which calls on China to immediately admit independent observers to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The document proposed by Canada, in addition to Ukraine, was supported by more than 40 countries.

The agency, citing diplomatic sources from both countries, reports that after that Beijing warned Kiev that it would block the supply of at least 500,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine if Ukraine does not refuse to support the document.

As a result, Kiev withdrew its signature on Thursday.

Ukraine agreed to purchase 1.9 million doses of CoronaVac from the Chinese company Sinovac Biotech and received 1.2 million doses in early May.

Earlier, The Metro quoted a BBC source as saying that Chinese authorities were testing an artificial intelligence system on arrested Uyghurs in Xinjiang that could remotely determine a person’s emotional state.

The technology has already been tested on at least five inmates who were strapped to chairs by their arms and ankles.

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said that the Chinese COVID vaccine CoronaVac from Sinovac Biotech was not fully working

“The Chinese vaccine (…) has proved inadequate. You can see this from Chile’s experience in fighting the epidemic,” Draghi told reporters after the EU summit.

Earlier, US Deputy Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said that  Ukraine had become a victim of China.
