Too much vitamin D can put your health at risk

Vitamin D is essential for the proper functioning of the body, so many people take supplements of this nutrient to maintain recommended levels. However, excess of this vitamin can cause damage to health.

It helps the body absorb calcium and maintain strong bones. It also plays an important role in the immune system, the nervous system, and the muscles. There is evidence that this vitamin deficiency is even related to mental illnesses.

The daily exposure to the sun for a few minutes is usually sufficient for our body to produce the required amount of vitamin D, but in countries where winter is severe, it is not uncommon to take necessary nutrient supplements.

Vitamin D overdose, however, can cause symptoms of toxicityunderlines the experts at Express. Vitamin D poisoning occurs when levels of the nutrient in the blood exceed 150 nanograms per milliliter.

Also, because this vitamin is stored in body fat and slowly released into the bloodstream, the effects of its toxicity can persist even for months after a person stops taking the supplements.

Among other things, an overdose of vitamin D in the body can cause back pain, loss of appetite, constipation, dizziness, fatigue, muscle weakness, and increased blood pressure.

The problem can be treated by stopping vitamin D supplementation and restricting calcium in the diet. A doctor can also prescribe intravenous medications to control the condition.

To avoid problems caused by excessive intake of the nutrient, it is recommended to seek professional guidance before taking vitamin D supplements.
