A major side effect of eating pineapple

Despite the many health benefits of pineapple, this sweet and tangy fruit has an irritating side effect, says a nationally recognized nutrition and fitness expert.

A single cup of fresh pineapple contains more than 100% of the daily value of vitamin C and 180 milligrams of potassium.

Pineapple is also loaded with an enzyme called bromelain, which, according to dietitian Erin Palinski-Wade, author of Belly Fat Diet For Dummies, acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Bromelain can help heal burns, bruises, and muscle tension. Also, it may be able to reduce inflammation in people with arthritis, gum disease, and sinusitis.

However, excess bromelain can cause discomfort in the mouth, throat and stomach.

“Eating too much pineapple, and therefore too much bromelain, can cause negative side effects such as tongue irritation and burning sensation,” warns Palinski-Wade.

Also, people especially sensitive to bromelain may experience nausea, vomiting and diarrhea when eating too much pineapple, the specialist explained.

To avoid the uncomfortable side effects of bromelain, you can eat this nutritious fruit with some modifications.

“Try roasting or cooking the pineapple, as this helps break down the bromelain and reduces these side effects,” advises Palinski-Wade.

“If you prefer fresh pineapple, remember that the highest levels of bromelain are found in the stem and core, so avoid eating raw pineapple from these parts to reduce potential discomfort,” he recommends.
