Briton tried to hide lottery winnings from his wife and lost millions

A man, in the middle of a divorce, transferred a significant part of the funds to his mother’s account.

The man, who won more than £11million after playing Euromillions back in 2015, tried to hide them from his wife but lost half the amount in 2018.

The Briton, known by the initials NJ after winning filed for divorce from his wife and immediately tried to deprive his wife of part of the winnings.

He transferred much of the money to his mother’s account, who in turn went to a bank and tried to withdraw the money to an offshore account in Pakistan.

However, it turned out that the court had already frozen the accounts of the British until the end of the divorce proceedings.

NJ, who is a Muslim, said told The Court of Session in Edinburgh that his wife didn’t want anything to do with the winnings because it had been obtained through gambling.

Gambling is considered haram – Arabic for forbidden – in Islam and he explained that the Islamic view is that using the money is “sinful”.

However, at a hearing held on July 1, the judge did not take into account religious motives and decided to give the woman, known as HAJ, £4.8million from the prize.

The court also noted that NJ was trying to get state aid after allegedly losing money by transferring it to her mother’s account.

HAJ told the court that she plans to continue working as a nurse despite receiving the huge haul of Lottery winnings. NJ previously tried to claim state benefits after transferring his fortune to his mum.
