Scientists report a new danger of coronavirus

Published on

COVID-19 is a multi-organ disease that affects many people. COVID-19 has been identified as a possible risk factor for acute cardiovascular complications in previous studies.

By analyzing all COVID-19 cases in Sweden, scientists were able to quantify the risk of acute myocardial infarction and ischaemic stroke associated with COVID-19.

In the first two weeks after infection with coronavirus, the risk of heart attack and ischemic stroke increases significantly, scientists from the Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden, said.

This is reported in a scientific article in the journal Lancet.

In order to find out the effect of infection on the heart, experts conducted a study in which more than 86,000 people took part.

“This is the largest study in the world on the link between coronavirus and cardiovascular disease,” the article emphasizes.

It is noted that scientists compared the incidence of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with COVID-19 with the incidence of cardiovascular disorders in people from the control group (348,000 people) in the period from February 1 to September 14, 2020.

As specialists found out, coronavirus increased the risk of acute myocardial infarction and stroke in the first two weeks after the disease by about three times.

“This relationship persisted even taking into account factors such as comorbidities, age, gender and socio-economic factors,” the scientists noted.
