Scientists find a promising new COVID-19 treatment

Nigella sativa seeds also known as black cumin or Fennel flower have long been used as a traditional remedy for many infectious diseases.

Australian researchers have proven the benefits of black seed in the treatment of coronavirus infection.

It is noted that the seeds of Nigella Sativa – black cumin, Roman coriander, Kalindzhi have been used for centuries to treat many diseases, including inflammation and infections.

Scientists now claim that thymoquinone, which is the active ingredient in Nigella Sativa, is able to “stick” to the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and block it from causing lung infection.

“It may also block the ‘cytokine’ storm that affects seriously ill patients who are hospitalised with COVID-19,” the study author said.

Thymoquinone has been thoroughly researched in laboratories, including animal studies. These studies have shown that thymoquinone can help to moderate our immune system by preventing the release of pro-inflammatory chemicals like interleukins.

As a result, thymoquinone has the potential to be used as a treatment for allergic conditions such as asthma and eczema, arthritis conditions such as rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, and even multiple sclerosis.

Thymoquinone has a positive effect on the human immune system by preventing the release of interleukins, pro-inflammatory chemicals.

Thus, it plays an important role in the treatment of allergic diseases – asthma, eczema, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and even Staphylococcus aureus.

“Furthermore, the drug has recently been successfully given to patients as a nasal spray and topical paste,” said Dr Wissam Soubra, co-author.

Nigella Sativa has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. Nigella Sativa has also been shown to help patients with allergic rhinitis and sinusitis, eczema, osteoarthritis, and childhood epilepsy as an anti-inflammatory treatment.

Nigella Sativa has also been shown in a laboratory setting to be effective in killing bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus, which can cause a variety of mild to severe infections if they enter the skin, as well as viruses such as influenza.

However, it should not be used with poor natural absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.
