Stopping eating bread is not as good for your health as you think

If you don’t eat enough bread, you may not get enough refined grains either. That means you may end up not getting enough nutrients, reveals a study published in Frontiers in Nutrition.

The research, conducted in the United States this year, found that some adults had a 10% drop in energy levels due to the fact that they were not consuming refined grains. This caused their diets to lack some essential nutrients, such as fiber, magnesium, and iron.

“Bread, grains, and carbohydrates, in general, have a bad reputation in our society. However, carbohydrates are your body’s best source of fuel and the brain’s preferred energy source,” said nutritionist Sarah Williams to Eat This, Not That! (ETNT).

The specialist emphasized that in “a healthy and balanced diet” between 40% and 60% of the calories ingested must come from carbohydrates, which can include bread and cereals.

Nutritionist Kacie Barnes also said that bread is not a villain of food as many assume, so it is not necessary to eliminate it completely from the diet.

“Carbohydrates in moderation is a good thing—it helps give your body energy, especially if you’re planning to do any physical activity throughout the day,” said the doctor.

Barnes further added that a food group should not be eliminated from the diet without replacing it appropriately. According to the nutritionist, this can have undesirable consequences on our health.

The doctor explained, for example, that if you remove bread and grains from your diet and do not supplement that calorie deficit with other carbohydrates, there is the possibility that you will feel fatigued throughout the day.

“Remember that foods are not good and bad, it’s all just food, and all foods can fit. … It’s about learning how to balance healthy and fun foods and eating the portions that are best for your body and goals,” concluded the specialist.
