The animals were kept in terrible conditions and at low temperatures.

An Iowa farmer has been arrested in the United States on charges of animal cruelty. The pigs on his farm were abandoned, and 800 of them froze from the cold.

According to experts cited by Newsweek, the temperature of the pigs was about 40 degrees lower than what they needed to survive.

The 38-year-old owner of the farm was arrested after authorities uncovered dead pigs and other signs of maltreatment.

Court records show that Devola was hired to raise 2,500 piglets until they reached about 280 pounds. Later, a consultant visited the farm and found hundreds of animal carcasses.

The consultant told investigators that the temperature in the barns was too low for the pigs to survive and that several animals had frozen or frostbitten ears.

Court records say the pigs should be kept at 80 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, but the temperature inside Devol’s barn was less than 50 degrees.

It is noted that pigs did not have access to water, and some did not have access to food.
