Everyone gets overworked and tired sometimes, but burnout is more than just being tired. Burnout is when stress stays with you for a long time and hurts other parts of your life.
A British psychologist has identified four warning indicators of burnout, including physical and emotional tiredness.
Clinical psychologist Dr. Julie Smith has 4.2 million followers on TikTok, where she posts content on mental health issues. She maintains a private practice in Hampshire.
A recent video published by the expert shows signs of burnout.
Dr. Smith, who also posts on Instagram and YouTube, explained what burnout is and what it isn’t.
In her video, she included “chronic exhaustion,” “restlessness,” “trouble sleeping,” and “poor self-care” as symptoms of burnout.
Other symptoms include recurring emotional disturbance, such as anxiety, depression, or irrational outbursts, according to Dr. Smith.
“You may notice your performance at work is going down, while you feel you are working harder than ever,” the expert added, “you may also start feeling disconnected with loved ones and struggle to get along as well as you normally do.”
In her video, “4 signs you’re heading for burnout,” she talked about symptoms that people may have if they are on their way to getting burnt out.
1# “is disconnection from the people around you. You might be arguing more with your partner or your friends.”
2# “you’re procrastinating more than ever, and putting off even the smallest of tasks because they now feel overwhelming.”
3# “self care goes out the window’ when it comes to exercise, diet and sleep.”
4# “physical and emotional exhaustion. You feel tired, but wired and can’t sleep at night.”
It appeared that the video touched a chord with a number of viewers, as they shared their own experiences with burnout in the comments section below the video.
One said: “I burnt out and still go through episodes. Every time I try to change it the people around me drag me back in. so tired.”
Others admitted they had noticed all four of Dr. Smith’s warning indicators.
