To Breakfast Or Not To Breakfast? Everything We Were Told About Our First Meal Of The Day Is Wrong

Recent diet trends have emphasized the significance of meal timing in weight loss. According to this advice, consuming meals at specific times can greatly impact the amount of weight you shed.

Historically, it was recommended to have a substantial meal earlier in the day and smaller meals later on, if the goal was to lose weight. This approach is grounded in the fact that our bodies follow a 24-hour cycle, and nearly every cell operates on this schedule.

Circadian clocks are present in various parts of the body and regulate the daily rhythms of key biological functions, including metabolism.

But, according to a doctor, breakfast isn’t the most essential meal of the day.

Dr. Michael Mosley, who is well-known for his recommendations on how to lose weight, is fond of debunking what he sees as false beliefs about nutrition.

According to Coventry Live’s report, he has recently focused on debunking the traditional belief that breakfast is the most crucial meal of the day and a mandatory component of a dietary regimen.

Dr. Mosley recently took to the Fast 800 Instagram account and questioned the widely-held notion that having a substantial breakfast is an easy way to manage weight. 

According to him, skipping breakfast leads to hunger pangs later in the day, which prompts individuals to indulge in high-calorie junk food. 

“Eating breakfast revs up your metabolism, preparing you for the day. It seems a plausible suggestion but is it true?”

In a blog post, he elaborated on the subject, stating that in a study conducted on 300 overweight individuals, the researchers instructed the breakfast skippers to have breakfast, while the habitual breakfast-eaters were asked to skip it. 

The volunteers were weighed before and 16 weeks after the study began.

The outcome of the study was surprising. The breakfast skippers who forced themselves to eat breakfast lost an average of 0.76kgs, while the breakfast-eaters who skipped breakfast for 16 weeks lost almost the same amount, averaging 0.71kgs.

Researchers came to the conclusion that telling adults to eat breakfast didn’t help them lose weight if they were living on their own and trying to lose weight.

It is still advised that you eat breakfast even if you discover that doing so reduces your likelihood of experiencing hunger pangs during the day.

Every day, Dr. Mosley eats breakfast, but there is a condition that may maximize weight reduction.

In an interview with the Daily Mail last year, he advised individuals to listen to their bodies and not rush to have breakfast upon waking up. 

For those who don’t feel hungry until later in the day, Dr. Mosley recommends delaying breakfast as it extends the overnight fast period. 

He also added that there is no need to feel guilty if one chooses to skip breakfast and that it’s essential to find what works best for each individual. 

However, this doesn’t mean one can indulge in unhealthy eating habits later in the day.
