Canada boosts Ukraine aid, sends M777 howitzers to Kyiv

Canada continues to supply Ukraine with the military weaponry it requires to fight and win the conflict with Russia.

The Canadian government has approved the transfer of a number of M-777 howitzers and and associated ammunition to Ukraine.

The M777 lightweight 155-mm towed howitzer is smaller and lighter than any other gun of its type. The M777 is an indirect fire weapon capable of targeting targets at distances of up to 30 kilometers.

In addition, at Kyiv’s request, Canada provided Ukraine with a considerable number of additional Carl Gustaf anti-armour ammunition.

Canada is also nearing completion on contracts for a number of commercial-model armoured vehicles to be sent to Ukraine as soon as possible, as well as a service contract for the maintenance and repair of specialized drone cameras that Canada has already delivered to Ukraine.

Canada has committed about $118 million in military equipment to Ukraine since January 2022. Canada also provided $500 million in extra military aid to Ukraine in Budget 2022 for the fiscal year 2022-23.

Additionally, the US is collaborating with its Allies and partners to identify and supply Ukraine with new capabilities.

President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that the US will provide another $1.3 billion in military and humanitarian help to Ukraine, but that additional financing from Congress will be required soon to keep the weaponry flowing.

The current aid package would include $800 million in heavy artillery weapons, including 72 howitzers and 144,000 rounds of ammunition, as well as 121 tactical “ghost” drones, according to Biden. The United States also intends to offer an additional $500 million in humanitarian and economic aid.
