A bitter-tasting supplement reduces bad cholesterol levels by 25% – study

High Cholesterol is a widespread problem with serious cardiovascular consequences. It can lead to heart attack and stroke if left untreated. Fortunately, by lowering LDL levels by 25%, one supplement could function as a buffer against such cardiac attacks.

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is found in both the body and diet and is required for a variety of human processes. However, as scientists discovered that it contributed to the creation of plaque in the arteries, the condition was vilified.

The pathways constrict with time as a result of this, reducing blood flow.

Fortunately, two studies have demonstrated that a single herbal pill can reduce cholesterol levels by 25% in as little as six months.

Berberine is a bitter substance obtained from plants that has long been rumored to help strengthen the heartbeat.

However, the supplement has recently been found to be effective in the management of diabetes, bad cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

According to studies, the supplement may boost liver receptor protein production, which attaches to LDL molecules and excretes them from the body.

The supplement could be useful in reducing high lipid profiles, according to researchers who published their findings in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2017.

They said: “Preliminary animal and pilot human studies have shown that berberine produces a positive effect on the lipid profile.”

In one trial, 32 patients were given 500 mg of berberine twice day for three months while receiving no other treatment for their disease.

“In these patients, significant reductions in LDL, triglycerides, and total cholesterol were seen from baseline,” noted the authors.

LDL cholesterol was lowered by 25%, triglyceride levels were reduced by 35%, and total cholesterol was reduced by 29%.

The findings are in line with another small-scale study that lasted two months and involved 63 participants.

Berberine supplementation at a dose of 500 mg twice daily reduced LDL by an average of 23.8 percent in this study.

Furthermore, taking the supplement with 20mg of the cholesterol-lowering medication simvastatin twice a day reduced LDL cholesterol by 31.8 percent on average.

The supplement also successfully increased HDL cholesterol levels in the blood, according to the study.

LDL cholesterol, which accounts for the majority of the body’s cholesterol, is a major contributor to plaque formation within artery walls.

HDL cholesterol, on the other hand, is known as “good” cholesterol because it absorbs lipids and transports them to the liver.

As a result, high HDL cholesterol levels are linked to a lower risk of heart disease and stroke.

Other options for lowering bad cholesterol include:

Increased soluble fiber consumption may be recommended as a way to lower this cholesterol level.

Fibre functions by grabbing onto fatty molecules in the digestive tract and eliminating them from the body during digestion.

Workout can also lower bad cholesterol by increasing HDL levels, with doctors suggesting at least 30 minutes of exercise five times each week.

According to the Mayo Clinic, whey proteins taken as a supplement can help decrease LDL and total cholesterol levels.

Trans and saturated fats, for example, should be avoided.
