Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a significant risk factor for heart disease, therefore it is very important to have a result under 140/90.

Hot drinks have been shown to help reduce the risk of high blood pressure.

High blood pressure indicates your blood pressure is persistently higher than normal. If left untreated, this causes your arteries to tighten and narrow, thus decreasing blood flow to critical organs like the heart. Sufficiency of blood flow to the heart may increase your chance of having a heart attack.

Fortunately, by adopting good food choices, you can reverse this process.

Specific components have been discovered in research that may assist to prevent high blood pressure.

This includes oolong tea, a classic Chinese tea brewed from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant.

A research paper published in the journal JAMA Network, investigated the long-term effects of oolong tea consumption on the risk of hypertension.

The research was meticulously planned and included a large sample size (1,507 subjects of 711 men and 796 women).

The researchers collected comprehensive data on tea intake and other lifestyle and nutritional variables linked with an increased risk of hypertension.

The study found that individuals who consumed at least 120 mL (half a cup) of oolong tea daily for a year had a 46% reduced chance of developing hypertension than those who did not consume tea.

Additionally, individuals who drank 120 to 599 mL (two and a half cups) each day had a 65 percent lower risk of high blood pressure.

The researchers found that consuming at least 120 mL of oolong tea daily for a year substantially decreases the risk of developing hypertension in the Chinese population.

Millimetres of mercury (mmHg) – what does this measurement mean?

Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

The measurement is used to record two numbers:

  • The systolic pressure (higher number) is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body.
  • The diastolic pressure (lower number) is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels.

High blood pressure is defined as 140/90mmHg or higher (or 150/90mmHg or over if you are over the age of 80).

Generally, an ideal blood pressure reading is between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg.

It is important to remember that everyone’s blood pressure measurement will vary somewhat.

What you perceive to be low or high may be deemed normal by another.
