Doctor reveals an unusual and lesser-known sign of Melanoma skin cancer

During summer, direct exposure to the sun can cause skin cancer to develop skin cancer. Melanoma skin cancer is one of the most serious because it could move to other organs in the body.

Speaking to Holly and Phill on This Morning show, Dr. Sarra disclosed a lesser-known sign of skin cancer that can appear under your nails.

“Marks under your nails could be a melanoma,” warned Dr Sarra.

As she explained, the mark usually seems like a pigmented lesion.

A pigmented lesion is a black spot under the nail bed, said Dr Sarra.

Another lesser-known area where moles can surface is on the soles of your feet.

According to Dr Sarra, you should regularly check for moles that change in size.

“Set a monthly alarm and get a family member, partner or friend to check any areas that are difficult to see,” she advised.

It can hard to determine whether moles are changing in size but there is a workaround for the more imperceptible changes.

Taking a monthly photograph can help you to check if moles are changing size, noted Dr Sarra.

According to the doctor, most skin cancer is caused by ultraviolet (UV) light damaging the DNA in skin cells.

You can become exposed to UV light through sunlight and sun beds, she warned.

People who have lots of freckles, fair skin or moles are also at a greater risk, warned Dr Sarra.
