Struggling to Lose Weight? What Do You Lack? Probably These Two Vitamins

Maintaining a nutritious diet, engaging in regular exercise, and managing stress levels can greatly contribute to steady fat loss. However, there are instances where various factors make it nearly impossible to shed those extra pounds.

Metabolic disorders, often linked to deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, and hormones, can significantly impact the body’s ability to manage weight, resulting in adverse effects. Specifically, studies suggest that low levels of vitamin D and vitamin B12 may influence weight.

Vitamin D plays a crucial role in bone development and has been shown to reduce cancer cell growth, control infections, and alleviate inflammation. On the other hand, vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cell and DNA formation. Insufficient levels of this vitamin can lead to complications such as fatigue, constipation, muscle weakness, memory loss, and behavioral changes.

Experts emphasize that both vitamins can also enhance mood. Therefore, individuals undertaking weight loss endeavors may greatly benefit from ensuring adequate intake of these vitamins.

Is vitamin D helpful for weight loss?

Several studies have established a connection between obesity and insufficient vitamin D levels. Research indicates that obese or overweight individuals often exhibit lower vitamin D status.

This association may be attributed to adipokines, which are substances produced by adipose tissue and influence appetite regulation, energy expenditure, lipid metabolism, and glucose levels. These factors are critical for weight loss. When the production of adipokines is dysregulated, it can lead to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

One study published in the National Library of Medicine investigated the effects of vitamin D3 supplementation during weight loss. The study involved 218 overweight or obese women aged between 50 and 75. All participants followed a calorie-restricted diet and exercise regimen. Half of the women received a vitamin D supplement, while the other half received a placebo.

At the study’s conclusion, researchers observed that women who met their vitamin D requirements experienced greater weight loss, averaging an additional 7 pounds (3.2 kg) compared to those with inadequate vitamin D levels.

Can Vitamin B12 contribute to weight loss?

Health experts suggest that a deficiency in vitamin B12 can lead to long-term weight control issues. When the body’s natural balance is disrupted, it tends to slow down the metabolism, store more fat, and burn fewer calories throughout the day. Consequently, this stagnant state prevents the scales from showing progress despite significant efforts.

In another study published in the National Library of Medicine, the relationship between vitamin B12, obesity, insulin resistance, and body fat composition was further explored. This research involved 976 patients and revealed a correlation between low vitamin B12 levels and obesity or being overweight.

The study concluded that “Vitamin B12 was negatively correlated only with body mass index.”
