Apple unveils iOS 15 at WWDC 2021 – What’s New

Published on

The new operating system will receive a number of improvements aimed at both maintaining the personal data of users and increasing the functionality of the iPhone.

Apple on the first day of the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) announced new operating systems for its devices – iPhone, iPad, Watch, and Mac. Final versions of iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 8.0, and macOS Monterey are expected to be released in the fall of 2021.

Here’s everything you need to know about iOS 15 and its features.

What’s changing in iOS 15

A preview of iOS 15 is now available to developers participating in the Apple Developer Program. The public beta version of iOS will be available to users next month.

The release of the stable version of iOS 15 will be available to ordinary users in the fall of 2021 as a free update for iPhone 6s and newer models.

  • Facetime

Thanks to the SharePlay function, users of iPhones, iPads and Macs will be able to watch tiktoks, TV shows and streams together during a FaceTime call, as well as listen to music (the image can be displayed on Apple TV). Conversation participants will be able to manage content: pause, switch and rewind.

Apple said it wanted to make FaceTime communication more natural. To do this, they:

1. Added a portrait mode that focuses on the face and blurs the background.

2. Added spatial audio to group calls (will also appear on Macs and Apple TV) and a grid mode, in which you can see all the interlocutors at once. The voices of the interlocutors will sound as if they are in the same room with you. Moreover, their position in the virtual room corresponds to their position on the screen relative to other chat participants.

3. We learned how to clean out extraneous noises in real time, leaving only the voice. In this mode, the interlocutor will not hear the vacuum cleaner.

4. Added the ability to use the service on Android and Windows in a web browser (you need a link to video chat).

  • Focus

The new mode of operation of notifications using artificial intelligence distributes them into special groups, observing user behavior. iOS understands where the owner is, for example at home or work, and turns on the desired notification mode.

So, during working hours, there will be more notifications from colleagues and less from family and friends, but before going to bed – the opposite.

Do Not Disturb is now a status in iMessage. The interlocutors will be notified about it. But if necessary, you can send an important message that can bypass this mode.

The user will be able to combine some notifications himself and receive them in the form of a digest at a certain time of the day (Summary).

Contact photos will appear on text messages, and notifications themselves have become larger.

  • Live Text

IOS 15 neural networks have learned to recognize letters and numbers in photographs and convert them to text. For example, now you don’t have to rewrite the number from the sheet to make a call.

  • Spotlight

Now, in the search bar of the photo gallery, you can drive to your destination and the system will automatically display everything that is associated with this place on the device.

  • Memories

The function of automatically creating videos about events, phenomena, people or pets will now select music from Apple Music.

  • Wallet

With iOS 15, you can store digital versions of your home, car, work, or hotel room keys. Some countries will also have the ability to store documents such as a passport or driver’s license.

  • Weather

The new design with wide-resolution maps and new animations is intended to better perceive the weather outside the window.

  • Apple Maps

The navigator in the updated system will work not only for cars, but also for pedestrians. iOS 15 will warn you to get off public transport when approaching your stop.

  • Health

The application will allow you to assess the risk of a person falling by analyzing the user’s walking style using the sensors built into the iPhone. There will also be tips for improving motor coordination.

And more about iOS 15:

  • will allow hiding IP when using mail
  • Find your lost AirPods Pro and AirPods Max or warn you about forgotten earbuds
  • with Swift Playgrounds, you can write your application directly on your iPhone or iPad
  • a new section of App Privacy Report in Settings – in it users can see detailed information about what data are collected by installed third-party applications
  • Siri can now execute commands without an Internet connection: open a photo, calendar, turn on airplane mode, set a timer and other system functions
  • digital inheritance program to inherit your account
