Apple has provided updated information about app developer policiesThus, tracking methods for children’s apps are quite possible if certain rules are met. Originally, since 3 September 2019, all advertising and tracking measures in children’s apps in the App Store should be banned.

The updated developer documentation describes the new rules so apps can be added to the Kids section of the App Store. It remains true that apps in the Kids category may not contain “links from the app, shopping, or other distractions for kids.” In addition, they may “contain no third-party analytics or third-party advertising” . However, then follow the appropriate exceptions.

There are exceptions

“In limited cases, third-party analytics may be allowed provided the services do not transmit the Advertising ID or identifiable information about children.” However, neither the name, date of birth, e-mail address nor the device location may be collected.

Apple makes no statement as to what limited cases are meant here and what rules regulate when an app is affected.

Third-party contextual advertising may also be allowed in limited cases. This assumes “that the services have publicly documented practices and guidelines for children’s category applications”. That must include “a human review of advertising creatives on age justice” .

Apple announced some time ago to tighten the rules for children’s apps. In contrast, many app developers had protested and initially achieved a delay. They saw their business models impaired. Whether the new regulations can meet the requirements of the developers, will show.
