New study exposes every anti-vaxxer

Anti-vaxxers, who feel the Covid vaccination is dangerous, a scam, or a violation of their human rights, have used rare vaccine side effects to further their cause. A new study has now definitively disproved their claims.

In the time of coronavirus, the anti-vax movement has taken on a new meaning, with what was once a small group of conspiracy theorists bursting into a community of millions. Just this week, US Vice President Joe Biden described the current scenario as “a pandemic of the unvaccinated”.

Anti-vaccination activists have utilised social media to propagate false information regarding Covid vaccinations.

The risk of blood clots, a possible but extremely rare side effect of the AstraZeneca vaccine that raised some worry in medical circles during the early phases of the launch, has been one of the most popular reasons for people to avoid the vaccine.

While scientists and medical professionals were eager to assure the public that their risk of acquiring one of these extremely rare blood clots – known as Thrombosis With Thrombocytopenia (TTS) – was extremely low, the anti-vax movement jumped on the information.

Now, a new study has clarified the situation and shown one critical fact: you are more likely to develop a TTS from Covid than from the vaccine used to prevent infection.

The pre-print study, which was published this week in The Lancet, involved more than a million participants.

The research reported “similar safety profiles” for the AstraZeneca and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines.

It also noted that the risk of rare blood clots was much higher in those with COVID-19 than in those who received either vaccine.

Since March, AstraZeneca’s viral vector vaccine has been beset by worries over rare cases of blood clots, with younger patients in the UK being offered the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine instead.

However, the study’s authors conclude that the incidence of thrombosis is significantly higher in persons infected with Covid than in those who had the AstraZeneca or Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines.

The European Medicines Agency financed the study, which analysed data from over six million people in Catalonia, Spain.

Between December 2020 and May 2021, over 1.3 million of them were vaccinated – 945,941 with Pfizer (778,534 with two doses) and 426,272 with AstraZeneca.

The study also included 222,710 patients who had been infected with COVID-19.

The authors of the study wrote:

In this study, BNT162b2 [Pfizer] and ChAdOx1 [AstraZeneca] vaccines have been seen to have similar safety profiles.

Safety signals for both venous thromboembolic events and thrombocytopenia following BNT162b2 vaccination have been identified, with their magnitude similar to these same events among people vaccinated with ChAdOx1.

These safety signals must be interpreted with caution with further investigation required to confirm causality.

Regardless of the vaccine used, the increase in rates of thrombosis among persons with COVID-19 is far higher than those seen among persons vaccinated.

Since the pandemic’s inception, the fight against anti-vaxxers has been raging.

In October 2020, the Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) published a report criticising social media firms for allowing the anti-vaccine movement to thrive on their platforms.

The authors of the survey observed that the following of so-called anti-vaxxers on social media has climbed by at least 7.8 million individuals since 2019.

On Facebook alone, it is estimated that 31 million individuals follow anti-vax groups, while 17 million people subscribe to similar YouTube accounts.

According to the CCDH, the anti-vaccine campaign might generate annual revenue of US$1 billion for social media companies.

The report said:

The decision to continue hosting known misinformation content and actors left online anti-vaxxers ready to pounce on the opportunity presented by coronavirus.
