“I’ve been doing this for 40 years” but this was the “first [pretty unique]” rescue – Brinnon Fire Department Chief

“I don’t have any experience with that kind of a rescue, except for now, but I know that is not a good place to be,” Brinnon Fire Department Chief.

After falling headfirst into a toilet while trying to save her phone, a woman had to be rescued and washed down by firefighters.

On Tuesday afternoon, April 19, the woman was using her phone in the vault toilet at Mount Walker in Quilcene, Washington, when she dropped it into the waste below.

According to the Kitsap Sun, after detaching the toilet seat, the woman grabbed dog leads to try to fish the device out.

When that did not work, the brave hiker hooked herself up with the ropes and attempted to lower herself – only to tumble headlong into the vault.

“They didn’t work very well and in she went,” said Brinnon Fire Department Chief Tim Manly.

The woman who had traveled alone to Mount Walker attempted to exit the vault but was unable to do so.

After she found her phone in the toilet, thankfully, her phone was still working and she was able to get a signal so called 911 and get help for herself.

“I imagine that she was probably very fortunate,” Manly said.

“I don’t have any experience with that kind of a rescue, except for now, but I know that is not a good place to be.”

A harness was used to lift the woman out of the water.

The woman was washed down and “was strongly encouraged to seek medical attention after being exposed to human waste,” the department said, “but she only wanted to leave.”

“This was pretty unique,” Manly said of the incident.

“I’ve been doing this for 40 years and that was a first.”
