Body of a soldier who threatened to kill a virologist found in Belgium: what happened

Published on

The probable cause of death is suicide.

The body of Belgian soldier Jürgen Conings, who went missing in mid-May after taking weapons from a military base and threatening to kill Virologist Marc Van Ranst, has been found in Belgium.

The man was found dead in a national park near the Dutch border. The body was discovered by accident: Maaseik Mayor Johan Tollenaer smelled the corpse decomposing while riding a bicycle. It was he who turned to the police.

Note that the military was on the list of suspected extremists and made threats, such as the expert Marc van Ranst, who is responsible for combating the coronavirus in Belgium.

The virologist and his family were hidden in a safe place after the threats.

Earlier, police found a car of a Belgian soldier, containing four anti-tank grenade launchers with ammunition.

The probable cause of his death was suicide. It is also reported that Conings left letters in which he wrote that he “could no longer live in a society where politicians and virologists have taken everything away from us.”

“It’s especially a relief for my son that he has been found,” Mr Van Ranst told De Morgen newspaper.

I’ve been [in the safe house] for a little over a month now. And it’s my birthday today, a birthday alone. Anyway, I hope to return to normal life soon.

In a tweet, he added:

My thoughts go out to the relatives and children of Jü rgen Conings. For them this is very sad news, because they lose a father, a relative or a friend.
